Narrative Thread: What Do We Truly Want and Need?

As we graduate and learn more about the world. We also find ourselves being flooded by new opportunities.

With more responsibility we learn about retirement planning, self-promoting online, and about supplements for nutrition. There are ample opportunities that arise in life that might we feel pressure to do. It can become overwhelming to balance it all. But there some tools that may help.

Using a narrative thread in our personal lives is an idea I learned from Dr. Ken Schneck, Professor and Director at Baldwin Wallace University. A narrative thread is your storyline. This gives you a filter to say “yes” to opportunities that align with your brand. And to a filter to say “no” to those that do not.

First, to understand your narrative thread, you should understand what drives you and how your experiences have shaped you. With an idea of your strengths and what your patterns of though say about you, you can start to leverage those experiences in decision making.

When a new opportunity arises, you can say “hell yes” or “no thank you” without a fear of missing out or feeling behind. Because you know what works for you and what you want to move towards. You know what your strengths are, what you have done, and, now a filter in what you really need to do make it a happy ending.

Do not fall prey to the narrative of others as what makes them tick may not be what you want. Instead, focus on using your values to guide what comes next.
