Personal branding is promoting yourself as you are. Yes, kind of like selling and promoting yourself. But not for fame.
Why do it? When you die(surprise, sorry), what will you be remembered for? If you do not care, then what do you want to achieve in this lifetime? There are hundreds of people who would love to get to know you, help you achieve, and you can further develop your strengths with. (Read this paragraph if you do not know your strengths.)
No one remembers the person who does not know who they are nor what they want. We remember others who communicate something about them in some form. I met someone today who is moving to Wyoming for their next chapter in life. I had so many questions. And I remember her name because moving to Wyoming is unique.
How to start building your brand(and not to do):
- Understand your strengths: What do you want people to think of when they talk about you? What do you want the first impression to be?
- Keep updated profiles: We are talking updated bios and profile photos. Those you do rarely use, fully delete the profiles or include “not updated” in the bio with no profile photo. This helps you focus where it matters for you most.
- Post consistently: Make it a habit to post multiple times a week. There is a rule of thumb for different platforms, but reusing content when you start can make it easier.
- What not to do: Over think it. Being social should be simple and fun. You share your thoughts and connect with like-minded individuals.
Historians have leveraged hieroglyphics, cave painting, and stone hedges to understand what people were feeling, thinking, and doing. It may be exaggerating to say Instagram will be used to study humankind centuries from now… but maybe it’s not. What impact will you leave?
